POSITION SUMMARY

The Able Seaman is responsible for the operation and upkeep of all vessels and related equipment in accordance with the instructions from the Captain, Pilot, and/or Boatswain. This position is a bargaining unit position that is represented by the District No. 1-PCD, Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association, AFL-CIO.

III. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge and ability to effectively use all forms of lifesaving and fire fighting equipment
• Knowledge of handling vessel rescue boats under power as well as deployment of evacuation equipment
• Knowledge of all safety equipment
• Knowledge of the maintenance of vessels and their safety equipment
• Watch standing; including helm, lookout, and watchmen duties
• Safety consciousness: looks out for safety of self and others
• Personal bearing and behavior: works within chain of command as a team member and adheres to standards of appearance and attitude
• Productivity: timely and effective use of knowledge and initiative while being responsible for one’s actions and flexible on work assignments and schedules
• Public Relations: executes the mission statement by interacting with the public to answer questions and share knowledge of the local community, and community events
• Reliability: adheres to policies and procedures relating to attendance, punctuality, flexibility, and will be available for recall for unscheduled work assignments.
• Executes Marine SOPs: performs duties according to the SOP so as to develop consistency and competency in carrying out tasks


IV. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or equivalent experience


V. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATES

• Valid driver’s license
• Must possess a valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine Document endorsed as Able Seaman, Special or higher

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Use of safety equipment such as fire hoses, axes, extinguishers, SCBAs, rescue boats/rafts/IBAs/evacuation chutes, and VHF radios
• Splicing and handling mooring lines and small items to facilitate getting underway and securing the vessel
• Operating cranes, ramps, and gangways, either manually or by power, as needed to facilitate getting underway or securing the vessel
• Parking and unloading the vehicles, securing the chains, nets and vehicle wheels
• Monitoring of passenger access/egress areas for AV/PA function, vessel integrity and cleanliness, and passenger safety and information needs
• Maintaining a proper lookout, conducting watchman tour, and steering the vessel
• Maintaining vessel cleanliness, including trash removal from vessel, cleaning and polishing of brass/stainless/windows, sougeing, and chipping and painting
• Conducting the vessel fueling and watering operation under the direction of the Chief Engineer
