Able Bodied Seaman (Critical Rating) - The Able Bodied Seaman is an unlicensed member of the ship's deck department crew and requires the endorsement of Able Seaman Special, Limited, or Unlimited on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document.
Responsibilities
The Able Bodied Seaman stands watch while in port or at sea and performs routine deck department maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, painting, preserving the ship. Other responsibilities include duty underway replenishment rigs, dry/liquid cargo handling in both cargo holds and on deck, forklift operation and helicopter flight deck operations on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (Salary range: $23,761 to $36,248 plus overtime)
NOTE: Effective 16 Dec 01, East Coast Able Bodied Seaman also receive a total retention allowance of 25% that equates their base pay to $35,928 effective the date they are hired.
