Overview
The Port of Mumbai, a fully integrated multipurpose port, is located almost midway on the West Coast of India. The port, having a natural deep-water harbour of 121 sq. Kms, serves to hinterland stretching over the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat to some parts of Rajasthan and Punjab.
Mumbai Port started operations long back in 17th century with Western Europe, Persian Gulf and registered a flourishing trade of wooven goods, raw silk, diamonds, tea, porcelain and drugs.
The Port of Mumbai comprises of 38 multipurpose berths stretching over three docks viz. - Prince's Dock, Victoria Dock, Indira Dock and six marine oil terminals located at Jawahar Dweep and Pir Pau. The port handles a wide range of cargo varying from POL (crude & products), edible oil, fertilizer raw material to iron & steel products and containers. Overall, the port has handled 30.38 million tonnes of traffic in 1999-2000.
The Port of Mumbai is well connected to its hinterland through road and rail network. The entire port area is served by an extensive road network stretched over 126 Kms and connected to prime hinterland destinations by National Highways. The port also owns and operates its own railway system supported by 11 Km long mainline track with six stations and 11 locomotives. The overall rail network of the port constitutes a total track length of 130 Kms inclusive of sidings.
Future plan
The Mumbai Port has formulated plans for augmentation of POL/chemical handling capacity, replacement of submarine pipelines and wharf cranes, revamping of railway system, modernisation of oil jetties, etc. The port is also contemplating the idea of constructing a second liquid chemical/POL berth at New Pir Pau through private sector participation.
