Overview
Port of Cochin, strategically located on the South-West Coast of India, is one of the premier ports, involved in international trade. The port, situated around 930 km South of Bombay and 320 km North of Kanyakumari, has direct ocean route to Australia and the Far East from Europe. The all weather Cochin port is supported by two channels - Ernakulam and Mattancherry channel and served to a limited hinterland stretching over the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The Port of Cochin has emerged out of the Cochin harbour, which is a result of a major geographical development in 1341 AD. The ports business initially was from coastal trade. The port has undergone major infrastructural expansion since then, under the supervision of Sir Robert Bristow. It was declared a Major Port of India in 1936.
Future plans
Cochin Port Trust is planning to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at the South end reclamation area of the Wilingdon Island with Kerala State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) and private sector parties to promote agro-based export processing units. Besides promoting private entrepreneurship, the SEZ would help the development of Cochin port. The port of Cochin is targeting 25 million tonnes by 2006-07 ,doubling up its present traffic volume.
