India and is chartering new frontiers to become #1 in Asia in terms of traffic handling.
Today Kandla has become the hub of foodgrains, fertilizers, timber logs hazardous cargo and oil
imports.
Detailed Description
The Kandla port was commissioned as a major port in 1955. The port is located at the Eastern end of the Gulf of Kutch and Western bank of Kandla creek in the Western coast of Gujarat. The port has become hub for the import of food grain & oil. The all weather port with natural harbour serves to the vast land-locked hinterland of North and North-West India covering the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir as well as Eastern Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh.

The Kandla port has developed itself as the most economical major port in terms of tariff and economical expenditure. The port provides safe shelter to vessels in times of rough weather and navigation is permitted through out day and night depending on the draft of the ship and tidal situation. It is well connected through rail and road network with its hinterland.

Future plan
Kandla port authorities envisage massive expansion and development in the area of infrastructure and cargo-handling facilities. Major developmental projects taken up by the port include conversion of Samakhiali-Palanpur railway line from metre gauge to broad gauge, construction of additional storage facilities, development of 11th & 12th cargo berth, development of a multipurpose berth at Vadinar, development of satellite port at Tuna and construction of lay up berth for flotilla.

The port has also made significant achievements in the field of privatisation in pursuance of the Government directives of economic reforms and liberalisation. With large scale expansion projects and increased efficiency in port facilities and related infrastructure, Port of Kandla is moving towards achieving the massive target of handling nearly 233 million tonnes of cargo in 2020.
