Overview
Located at the nexxus of two interstate highways, two transcontinental railroads and two major rivers, the Port of Portland is the transportation logistics center for the Pacific Northwest.
Detailed Description
The Port of Portland is a deep-water seaport located on Columbia and Willamette rivers in Northwestern Oregon, approximately 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
Created in 1891 to dredge a shipping channel from Portland to the sea, its responsibilities now include owning and maintaining five marine terminals, four airports (Portland International, Troutdale, Hillsboro and Mulino Airports) and seven business parks.
The Port's maritime operation exports more wheat than any other port in the United States and is the largest mineral bulk handling port (by volume) on the West Coast. It is the second largest grain exporting center in the world. In addition, the Port is the ninth in terms of total tonnage, the fifteenth largest container port and the fourth highest volume auto port in the country.
