EMAIL THIS PRECIOUS STARTS BUYING By David Hughes Published: Tue, 1 December 2009 As it nears the end of a large scale clear-out of older tonnage Thai-based handysize dry cargo specialist Precious Shipping has, as expected, started buying modern second-hand tonnage. Until now Precious had been holding off while second-hand values continued to drift downwards even though this has had had a marked effect on its earnings. The company has sold 20 vessels and plans to dispose of another five. In Q3 it had an average of 29 ships in its fleet and made a net profit of US$21.03m, down from $42.45m a year previously. Now Precious says it is to take delivery of a 2005-built 29,870dwt vessel, renamed the Rojarek Naree on the 15 December. She will immediately commence employment under a time charter with one of the company's existing clients which should last for a minimum of 12 months to a maximum of 28 months. Precious says that the actual duration will be decided by the client within 90 days of her starting the charter. The company bought the Japanese-built ship was for $22.25m and the initial time charter contract will result in an EBITDA of a minimum of $3.28m, if it lasts 12 months, or a maximum of $7.0m if it extends to 28 months. Managing director Khalid Hashim says: “We will continue with our strategy to fix our ships out on longer term time charters and we will spare no efforts to find the right clients, at the right daily time charter rate, before committing any of our ships on such longer term period time charters.” While Precious is expected to swoop on modern tonnage in the sale and purchase market, adding perhaps 25 vessels, it has also ordered 18 new ships from India's ABG shipyard at a total cost of about $518m.
