South Street Seaport Museum preserves and interprets the maritime history of New York City, featuring historic ships, exhibitions, and educational programs.
The Maritime History Virtual Archives focuses on sailing ships from the second half of the 19th century, including detailed lists of multi-masted ships, maritime history, and shipwrecks.
Opened in 1991, the Museum offers a world-class collection of maritime art, models of historic sailing ships and a history of the Channel Coast and early 20th century development of Channel Islands Harbor and nearby Port Hueneme.
The Museum is open daily from 11 AM to 5 PM. Admission is free, but donations are
gratefully accepted. Knowledgeable docents are available to explain the exhibits. Special maritime educational programs are available for school children, including "at sea" activities aboard affiliated research and sail training vessels.
