BP, XRG, and UCC Secure Licence to Unlock 4 Tcf of Venezuelan Offshore Gas
By MGN Editorial•August 14, 2026 at 12:00 PM
A consortium comprising BP, ADNOC's XRG, and UCC Oil and Gas Holding has obtained a key offshore licence off Venezuela, targeting 4 trillion cubic feet of proven gas resources in a significant step for Caribbean energy development.
## BP-Led Consortium Advances Venezuelan Offshore Gas Development
UK energy major BP, alongside Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's investment arm XRG and UCC Oil and Gas Holding, has secured a critical offshore licence off the Venezuelan coast, marking a significant milestone in efforts to commercialise one of the region's largest untapped gas reserves.
According to Offshore Energy, the licence covers acreage holding an estimated 4 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven gas resources — a scale that positions the project as a potentially transformative development for both Venezuela's energy sector and regional gas supply dynamics.
### Strategic Significance
The move signals growing international appetite to re-engage with Venezuelan offshore assets despite the country's complex regulatory and geopolitical environment. Venezuela holds some of the largest hydrocarbon reserves in the Western Hemisphere, yet chronic underinvestment and sanctions have long constrained production capacity.
The involvement of BP — a company with extensive deepwater and LNG expertise — alongside XRG, which represents ADNOC's international investment strategy, and UCC Oil and Gas Holding, lends the consortium considerable technical and financial credibility. The partnership structure also reflects a broader trend of Gulf state energy companies expanding their upstream footprint in Latin America.
### Offshore Development Gathers Pace
The licence award comes as offshore energy development activity in the Caribbean and South Atlantic regions accelerates, driven by strong global demand for natural gas and LNG as a transition fuel. Successful development of the Venezuelan resource could eventually feed into regional gas markets or support LNG export infrastructure, though significant technical, financial, and regulatory hurdles remain before first gas could be achieved.
No timeline for exploration drilling or field development has been publicly confirmed at this stage. Industry observers will be watching closely for further announcements regarding work programme commitments and any updates on the sanctions landscape that has historically complicated international investment in Venezuelan energy projects.
