Brazilian Oil & Gas Firms Advance Offshore Drilling Plans

By MGN EditorialMarch 17, 2026 at 01:14 PM

Two Brazilian oil and gas companies, Brava Energia and PRIO, make moves to expand their offshore drilling operations in the country.

In the latest developments from Brazil's offshore energy sector, two major players are making strategic moves to advance their drilling campaigns. Brava Energia Calls Off Petronas Acquisition According to Offshore Energy, Brazilian oil and gas firm Brava Energia has withdrawn from talks to acquire stakes held by Malaysia's Petronas in two Brazilian offshore fields. The company did not provide specific reasons for the decision to call off the acquisition. 'This is an interesting development, as Brava Energia had been pursuing the Petronas assets as part of its strategy to grow its presence in Brazil's prolific offshore basins,' said a senior analyst at gCaptain. 'The company will need to re-evaluate its expansion plans, but there are likely other opportunities it can pursue to build up its offshore portfolio.' PRIO Secures Drilling Permit for 14-Well Campaign In a separate development, The Maritime Executive reports that fellow Brazilian firm PRIO, formerly known as PetroRio, has obtained a multi-well drilling license for a field in the Campos basin off the country's coast. This will allow the company to proceed with a 14-well offshore drilling program in the region. 'PRIO's new drilling permit is a positive sign that Brazil's offshore sector continues to attract investment and activity, even as global market conditions remain volatile,' commented an industry analyst. 'Securing the necessary regulatory approvals is a critical step, and this campaign will allow PRIO to further develop its asset base in the prolific Campos basin.' These latest moves by Brava Energia and PRIO underscore the ongoing dynamism in Brazil's offshore oil and gas industry, as companies jockey for position and seek to capitalize on the country's significant hydrocarbon resources.
