Bulk Carriers Navigate Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions
By MGN Editorial•March 14, 2026 at 12:06 PM
Over 20% of bulk carriers stranded in the Arabian Gulf have transited the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the Iran conflict, according to industry data.
In a sign of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, data from maritime analytics firm Signal Ocean shows that 36 bulk carrier vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the Iran-US conflict.
According to the Seatrade Maritime report, this represents nearly 20% of the approximately 240 bulkers that were stranded in the Arabian Gulf region due to the geopolitical situation. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global maritime trade, with over 20% of the world's oil supply passing through the narrow waterway.
'The fact that we're seeing nearly 20% of the stranded bulkers in the region manage to transit the Strait is an encouraging sign, but the overall situation remains very volatile,' said a senior analyst at Signal Ocean. 'Shipowners and operators are having to carefully weigh the risks of sending vessels through the region at this time.'
The report comes as regional tensions remain high, with the potential for further military confrontation between Iran and the United States or its allies. Tanker and bulk carrier operators have been forced to re-evaluate routing and security measures when transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global chokepoint.
'Shipowners are in a difficult position, having to balance commercial realities with the very real security risks in the region,' said the analyst. 'We expect to see continued volatility and uncertainty in maritime operations in the Arabian Gulf in the coming months.'
