BV, CMA CGM and SDARI Collaborate on AI-Assisted Containership Design Concept

Bureau Veritas, CMA CGM and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute have launched a joint development project exploring AI-powered decision-support technology for container vessels, with a human-in-the-loop design philosophy at its core.

Three major players in the maritime industry — Bureau Veritas (BV), French container shipping giant CMA CGM, and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) — have joined forces to develop an AI-assisted containership concept, according to Seatrade Maritime. The joint development project (JDP) was unveiled at SMM, the international maritime trade fair held in Hamburg, and signals a growing industry push to integrate artificial intelligence into vessel operations and design without removing human oversight from critical decision-making processes. At the heart of the initiative is a commitment to keeping seafarers and operators firmly in control. Rather than pursuing full autonomy, the collaboration is focused on developing decision-support systems that augment human judgment — a philosophy increasingly favoured by regulators and operators alike as the industry navigates the complex regulatory and safety landscape surrounding autonomous and semi-autonomous shipping. The involvement of BV, one of the world's leading classification societies, brings a critical regulatory and technical assurance dimension to the project. Classification societies play a pivotal role in validating new technologies for commercial deployment, and BV's participation suggests the concept is being developed with an eye toward real-world certification pathways. CMA CGM, one of the world's largest container shipping groups, contributes deep operational expertise and a clear commercial incentive to improve vessel efficiency and safety through intelligent systems. SDARI, a prominent Chinese ship design institute with extensive experience in containership development, rounds out the consortium with naval architecture and engineering capability. The announcement reflects a broader industry trend in which shipowners, designers, and classification societies are forming structured partnerships to responsibly develop and validate AI applications in shipping. Decision-support tools — covering areas such as route optimisation, fuel management, predictive maintenance, and navigational assistance — are seen as a pragmatic near-term application of AI that can deliver measurable operational benefits while maintaining compliance with existing maritime regulations. As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) continues to develop its regulatory framework for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), industry consortia such as this one are helping to shape what responsible AI integration looks like in practice. The BV-CMA CGM-SDARI project is expected to progress through defined JDP stages, with findings likely to inform future class notations and industry guidelines.
