BW ESS Acquires 200 MW / 800 MWh Battery Energy Storage Portfolio in France from Recurrent Energy
By MGN Editorial•October 29, 2026 at 12:00 PM
BW ESS has completed the acquisition of two utility-scale battery energy storage projects in France, totalling 200 MW / 800 MWh, in a deal that underscores growing maritime-linked energy group BW's push into grid-scale storage infrastructure.
## BW ESS Expands European Energy Storage Footprint with French BESS Acquisition
BW ESS, the battery energy storage arm of the BW Group — one of the world's largest maritime and energy conglomerates — has completed the acquisition of two 100 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in France from Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ).
The transaction, announced via PR Newswire on 29 October 2026, transfers a combined 200 MW / 800 MWh portfolio to BW ESS, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to build out large-scale energy storage assets across Europe.
According to the announcement, the deal demonstrates Recurrent Energy's capability to develop and successfully monetise high-quality battery energy storage projects at scale. The Canadian Solar subsidiary has positioned itself as a developer-seller in the rapidly expanding European BESS market, where grid stability and renewable energy integration are driving strong institutional demand.
### Strategic Significance for BW Group
For BW ESS, the acquisition represents a continuation of the BW Group's broader energy transition strategy. The BW Group, headquartered in Singapore, has deep roots in shipping and offshore energy, operating one of the world's largest fleets of LPG carriers and maintaining significant interests in floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs). The group's move into grid-scale battery storage reflects an industry-wide trend of maritime energy majors diversifying into onshore and nearshore clean energy infrastructure.
France represents a strategically attractive market for BESS investment, with the country's grid operator actively procuring ancillary services and capacity mechanisms that reward fast-response battery storage assets.
### Market Context
The European battery energy storage market has seen accelerating deal activity through 2025 and 2026, driven by the intermittency challenges posed by expanding wind and solar capacity. Utility-scale BESS projects are increasingly viewed as critical infrastructure by both grid operators and energy investors.
For maritime-linked energy groups such as BW, onshore storage assets also complement floating energy infrastructure, including FSRUs and offshore wind support vessels, creating integrated energy portfolios that span sea and shore.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Canadian Solar's Recurrent Energy division retains a substantial development pipeline across Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific.
