Chevron Celebrates 2,000th LNG Cargo from Australian Project

Chevron's Australian subsidiary marks a major milestone with the 2,000th cargo from its massive Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) project off Western Australia.

Chevron Australia, a subsidiary of the U.S. oil and gas giant Chevron, has celebrated a new achievement at its giant gas project off the northwest coast of Western Australia (WA), with the loading of its 2,000th liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo. According to Offshore Energy, the Gorgon LNG project, one of the world's largest natural gas projects, began production in 2016 and has since become a major supplier of LNG to customers in Asia. The milestone cargo was loaded onto an LNG carrier at Chevron's Barrow Island facility and departed for an international market. 'Reaching this significant milestone is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Gorgon team, as well as the continued strong performance of the facility,' said Mark Hatfield, Chevron Australia's managing director. 'Gorgon has been a game-changer for the Australian energy sector, providing reliable LNG supply to our customers in the Asia-Pacific region.' The Gorgon project, which cost over $54 billion to develop, has the capacity to produce up to 15.6 million tonnes of LNG per year. It is a joint venture between Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, Osaka Gas, Tokyo Gas, and JERA. The achievement comes as the global LNG market faces ongoing supply tightness, with demand remaining strong particularly in Asia. Chevron's milestone highlights the critical role that major Australian LNG projects continue to play in meeting international energy needs.
