CMA CGM Introduces Bypass Routes to Avoid Hormuz Strait
By MGN Editorial•March 19, 2026 at 12:12 PM
Ocean liner CMA CGM is launching multimodal transport options to bypass the Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions.
In response to rising geopolitical risks in the Middle East, French shipping giant CMA CGM has announced the introduction of new land-based transport routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
According to FreightWaves, CMA CGM is rolling out 'emergency multimodal transport options' for shipments to and from the United Arab Emirates and other northern Gulf countries. The new routes will utilize a combination of ocean, rail, and road transport to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen a series of maritime incidents and seizures of commercial vessels in recent months.
'The safety and security of our employees, our ships, and our customers' cargo is an absolute priority,' said a CMA CGM spokesperson. 'We are working to provide alternative solutions to ensure business continuity for our customers in this region.'
The new bypass routes come as regional tensions have escalated, with Iran threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to US sanctions. About a fifth of the world's oil supply flows through the 21-mile wide channel, making it a critical global trade chokepoint. Disruptions to shipping in the area could have significant impacts on energy and commodity markets worldwide.
CMA CGM's move to establish alternative overland transport links underscores the maritime industry's growing concerns about the security of the region. Rival carriers and freight forwarders are likely to follow suit in developing contingency plans to mitigate potential supply chain risks in the Strait of Hormuz.
