CMA CGM Sets Chinese Volume Record with Biomethanol Bunkering
By MGN Editorial•March 9, 2026 at 04:08 PM
CMA CGM's newly delivered 13,000-TEU container ship was refueled with 3,643 tons of biomethanol at the Port of Shanghai, setting a new record for the largest volume of alternative fuel bunkered in China.
In a significant milestone for the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts, French shipping giant CMA CGM has set a new record for the largest volume of biomethanol bunkered in China. The company's newly delivered 13,000-TEU container ship, the CMA CGM Osmium, was refueled with 3,643 tons of the sustainable fuel over the weekend at the Port of Shanghai.
The record-breaking bunkering operation was part of CMA CGM's ongoing partnership with the world's largest container port to accelerate the adoption of alternative fuels. Biomethanol, produced from renewable sources, is a key component of the shipping line's strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
'This landmark achievement demonstrates CMA CGM's commitment to the development of cleaner marine fuels,' said Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group. 'As we work towards our sustainability goals, partnerships like this one with the Port of Shanghai will be crucial in driving the industry's energy transition.'
The CMA CGM Osmium's biomethanol bunkering operation surpasses the previous record set in 2024, when a 9,000-TEU vessel was refueled with 2,800 tons of the alternative fuel at the same port. This latest development underscores the growing momentum behind the use of sustainable marine fuels, which industry experts say will be essential in meeting global emissions reduction targets.
'Biomethanol and other low-carbon fuels will play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the shipping sector,' said Bjørn Tore Orvik, Director of Sustainability at the International Chamber of Shipping. 'The record set by CMA CGM in Shanghai is a testament to the industry's progress and the increasing viability of these technologies.'
As shipping companies continue to invest in alternative fuel infrastructure and vessel retrofits, industry observers expect to see more landmark bunkering events like this one in the years ahead. The successful CMA CGM operation in Shanghai serves as a model for other ports and operators seeking to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable maritime future.
