Maritime Industry Briefing: COSCO's Bulker-to-Boxship Conversion Milestone and Saudi Tanker Loadings Resume
By MGN Editorial•September 30, 2026 at 12:00 PM
COSCO completes a landmark supramax-to-containership conversion in just over three months, while Saudi Arabia resumes crude loadings at Yanbu as DHT secures a VLCC fixture at $55 million.
## COSCO Marks Conversion Milestone as Fleet Flexibility Gains Traction
COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard has completed what is believed to be the first conversion of a supramax bulk carrier into a containership, signalling a growing trend of vessel repurposing as operators seek to capitalise on shifting freight market dynamics.
According to Alphaliner, the vessel in question — the *Pu Tuo Hai*, a 53,000 dwt Diamond 53 bulker built in 2007 — entered the Guangzhou yard on 10 June and emerged approximately three months later as a fully converted containership. The relatively swift turnaround underscores the technical capability of Chinese yards to execute complex conversion projects within commercially viable timeframes.
The *Pu Tuo Hai* conversion is reported to be the first of at least two such projects, suggesting COSCO is developing a repeatable methodology for supramax-to-boxship transformations. The move reflects broader industry interest in vessel conversion as an alternative to newbuilding, particularly as containership demand has remained elevated in certain trade lanes while the dry bulk segment faces more subdued conditions.
Fleet conversion projects of this nature carry significant implications for both the bulk carrier and container shipping markets, potentially offering owners a cost-effective route to reposition tonnage without committing to the longer lead times and capital expenditure associated with newbuild orders.

## Saudi Arabia Resumes Yanbu Loadings; DHT Fixes VLCC at $55 Million
In the tanker market, satellite imagery has confirmed the resumption of crude oil loadings at Saudi Arabia's Yanbu terminal on the Red Sea coast, according to Seatrade Maritime. The restart will be closely watched by tanker operators and oil traders, as Yanbu serves as a critical export hub for Saudi crude destined for European and Asian markets.
Coinciding with the Yanbu news, tanker owner DHT Holdings has reportedly fixed a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) for a Red Sea-to-Asia voyage at $55 million, a fixture that reflects continued demand for long-haul crude transportation on one of the world's most strategically significant trade routes.
The VLCC fixture is notable given the ongoing sensitivity around Red Sea shipping lanes, where geopolitical tensions have periodically disrupted vessel routing and freight rate calculations. A confirmed fixture at this level provides a useful market benchmark for VLCC earnings on the eastbound route.
Together, the resumption of Yanbu loadings and the DHT fixture suggest a degree of stabilisation in Red Sea crude export flows, though market participants are likely to continue monitoring the region closely for any further disruptions.
