Cox Enterprises Donates Massive Conservation Easement in South Carolina
By MGN Editorial•March 11, 2026 at 12:34 PM
Cox Enterprises forgoes development opportunity to protect over 20,000 acres of coastal wetlands and forests in one of the largest conservation easements in U.S. history.
In a landmark move for environmental conservation, Cox Enterprises has donated a 20,000-acre conservation easement on its Clarendon Farms property in South Carolina, one of the most significant such agreements ever recorded in the United States.
The donation, which was announced by Ducks Unlimited, will permanently protect critical coastal wetlands, forests, and wildlife habitats in the Beaufort region. By forgoing the potential for lucrative development, Cox Enterprises has underscored the importance of preserving sensitive ecosystems along the Atlantic seaboard.
'This donation represents Cox's steadfast commitment to sustainability and responsible stewardship of the natural environment,' said Alex Taylor, CEO of Cox Enterprises. 'While the land had tremendous commercial value, we felt it was our duty to ensure these unique habitats are protected for generations to come.'
The Clarendon Farms property features a diverse array of coastal environments, including tidal marshes, maritime forests, and freshwater wetlands. It provides vital habitat for numerous threatened and endangered species, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker and the loggerhead sea turtle. The conservation easement will safeguard these sensitive ecosystems in perpetuity.
'This is a landmark achievement in conservation that will have lasting impacts on the South Carolina Lowcountry,' said Adam Putnam, CEO of Ducks Unlimited. 'Cox Enterprises is setting a powerful example of corporate environmental stewardship that we hope others will follow.'
The donation was facilitated by the Lowcountry Land Trust and is expected to qualify for significant federal and state tax benefits. It represents one of the largest private conservation easements ever recorded in the United States.
