Explosion Hits MSC Boxship Near St. Petersburg
By MGN Editorial•February 5, 2026 at 04:54 PM
An explosion and fire have knocked out an MSC container ship near St. Petersburg, Russia, highlighting the risks facing vessels in the region.
A container ship operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has suffered an explosion and fire while approaching the port of St. Petersburg, Russia, according to reports from Splash247 and vessel tracking data.
The 2,732 TEU vessel MSC Giada III was en route from Belgium to St. Petersburg when the incident occurred in the Neva Bay near the Russian city. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but regional emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene.
The Liberia-flagged ship sustained damage from the blast and subsequent fire, though details on the extent of the damage or any injuries to the crew have not been reported. Vessel tracking data shows the MSC Giada III has been disabled and is no longer moving under its own power.
This incident underscores the hazards facing commercial ships operating in the Baltic region, especially those transiting to and from Russian ports. Tensions in the area remain high following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and smaller NATO states like Estonia have limited resources to police maritime traffic. The failed drug interdiction of the Russia-bound Baltic Spirit vessel in Estonia earlier this week is another recent example, according to gCaptain.
As the maritime industry continues to navigate the complex geopolitical environment in Eastern Europe, safety and security will remain paramount concerns for ship operators in the Baltic Sea.
