Fugro Secures Contract to Survey Deepwater Pipeline Routes Off Timor-Leste
By MGN Editorial•September 25, 2026 at 06:00 AM
Dutch survey specialist Fugro has been awarded a contract to conduct deepwater pipeline route surveys supporting the Greater Sunrise and Bayu Undan offshore energy developments off Timor-Leste.
## Fugro to Map Critical Deepwater Pipeline Corridors Off Timor-Leste
Dutch geoscience and survey specialist Fugro has signed a contract to carry out a major deepwater pipeline route survey programme off the coast of Timor-Leste, according to Splash247. The work will support the planning and development of offshore energy infrastructure associated with two strategically significant projects: the Greater Sunrise and Bayu Undan developments.
### Strategic Importance of the Survey Programme
The Greater Sunrise and Bayu Undan fields represent some of the most consequential offshore energy assets in the Timor Sea region. Greater Sunrise, which straddles the maritime boundary between Timor-Leste and Australia, holds an estimated 5.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and is considered central to Timor-Leste's long-term economic development ambitions. Bayu Undan, a mature field that has been in production for decades, is now the subject of renewed infrastructure planning as the region looks to maximise remaining reserves and establish new export pathways.
The pipeline route survey programme will provide critical subsea data to inform the engineering and routing decisions required before any pipeline construction can proceed. Deepwater surveys of this nature typically encompass geophysical, geotechnical, and environmental assessments, delivering the high-resolution seabed mapping that project developers and regulators require.
### Fugro's Role
Fugro is a globally recognised leader in offshore survey and geoscience services, with extensive experience in deepwater pipeline route investigations across major energy-producing regions. The company's involvement in the Timor-Leste programme underscores the project's progression toward a more advanced development phase.
The award reflects growing momentum behind Timor-Leste's efforts to develop its offshore hydrocarbon resources and establish the infrastructure necessary to monetise its gas reserves — a priority that successive governments in Dili have pursued as a cornerstone of national economic policy.
Further details regarding the contract scope, vessel deployment, and survey timeline have not yet been disclosed publicly.
