## Holland America Line Debuts Bar 1873 Aboard Oosterdam
Holland America Line has introduced Bar 1873, a new signature onboard venue designed to celebrate the cruise line's maritime legacy stretching back more than 150 years. The two-story atrium bar made its debut as a centrepiece of the Oosterdam's 'Evolution' transformation programme, according to a company announcement issued from Seattle on 16 October 2026.
The venue takes its name from Holland America Line's founding year and blends contemporary interior design with references to the company's long seafaring history. The concept positions Bar 1873 as a primary social gathering space for guests, reflecting a broader industry trend among major cruise operators to invest in distinctive, experience-led public spaces as a key differentiator in a competitive market.
Alongside the new bar, the Oosterdam refit also includes a reimagined Crow's Nest — a venue traditionally associated with Holland America vessels — which has been expanded to accommodate a wider range of live entertainment programming. The dual investment signals the line's intent to elevate onboard entertainment and hospitality offerings across its fleet.
The Oosterdam Evolution project is part of Holland America Line's ongoing fleet modernisation strategy, which has seen several vessels undergo significant interior upgrades in recent years. Such refits are increasingly common across the premium and contemporary cruise segments, as operators seek to refresh ageing tonnage and align product offerings with evolving passenger expectations without the capital expenditure of newbuild orders.
Holland America Line, a brand within the Carnival Corporation portfolio, has operated continuously since 1873, originally as a passenger and cargo service between the Netherlands and North America. The Bar 1873 concept directly references this founding identity, reinforcing the brand's heritage positioning in a market where authenticity and storytelling have become important elements of the passenger experience.
No financial details regarding the scope or cost of the Oosterdam's Evolution refit were disclosed in the announcement.
