Liupanshui Bets on Climate to Boost Tourism

A Chinese industrial city is leveraging its favorable climate to attract more visitors and diversify its economy.
Liupanshui, a traditional industrial city in Southwest China's Guizhou province, is taking on a new path to high-quality development in the tourism sector thanks to its unique climate, according to a report from chinadaily.com.cn.
The city, known for its coal mining and chemical industries, is now 'banking on its favorable climate' to lure more visitors. With an average annual temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and low humidity, Liupanshui enjoys a 'cool city' reputation compared to the sweltering summers of other parts of China.
'Liupanshui's climate is a distinct advantage that sets it apart from many other cities in China,' said Zhang Dingchao, the local Party chief. 'We are taking steps to leverage this asset and develop the city's tourism potential.'
The city is investing in new infrastructure and attractions to capitalize on its climate, including a network of hiking trails, water sports facilities, and a planned 'climate-themed' amusement park. Local officials are also promoting Liupanshui as a desirable summer retreat and 'escape from the heat' for travelers.
This shift towards tourism aligns with China's broader efforts to transition away from heavy industry and move up the value chain. Many cities are now looking to develop their service and high-tech sectors as drivers of economic growth. For Liupanshui, its unique microclimate could be the key to a successful transformation.
