## Lloyd's Register Clears BeHydro Hydrogen Engine for Marine Use UK-based classification society Lloyd's Register (LR) has issued approval for a 100% hydrogen-fuelled, spark-ignited marine engine developed by BeHydro, signalling a meaningful advance in the maritime industry's transition away from conventional fossil fuels. BeHydro is a joint venture between CMB.TECH, the clean hydrogen technology arm of the CMB Group, and Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) Engines, a Belgian manufacturer with deep expertise in medium-speed internal combustion engines. The collaboration has focused specifically on adapting proven engine architecture to run entirely on hydrogen, rather than as a dual-fuel or blended solution. According to Offshore Energy, the LR approval represents a critical commercial and regulatory threshold for the technology. Classification society endorsement is typically a prerequisite for shipowners and operators considering the adoption of novel propulsion systems, as it provides the assurance required by insurers, flag states, and financiers. ### Why This Matters Hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines occupy a distinct niche in the decarbonisation landscape. Unlike hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity electrochemically, spark-ignited hydrogen engines leverage existing manufacturing and maintenance infrastructure familiar to the marine sector. This pathway may offer a more accessible near-term route to zero-emission operations for certain vessel types, particularly those operating in short-sea or port-adjacent environments where hydrogen bunkering infrastructure is more feasible. The BeHydro engine approval comes as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) advances its revised greenhouse gas strategy, which targets net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. Shipowners face mounting pressure to identify credible alternative fuel pathways, and hydrogen — whether used in combustion engines or fuel cells — is widely regarded as a key component of the long-term solution. CMB.TECH has been among the more active proponents of hydrogen combustion technology in the industry, having already deployed hydrogen-powered vessels and harbour craft in demonstration projects. The LR approval for the BeHydro engine is expected to accelerate commercial interest from operators seeking type-approved, classification-backed solutions. ### Broader Energy Context The BeHydro development arrives against a backdrop of growing renewable energy investment across the regions that shipping serves. Separately, Envision Energy and AMEA Power announced during the Africa Energy Forum 2026 in Cape Town a partnership for the 500MW Amunet II wind project in Egypt, bringing the two companies' combined wind portfolio in the country to 1GW. Expanding renewable energy capacity in port regions is considered essential to producing the green hydrogen that next-generation marine engines and fuel cells will require at scale. The LR approval for BeHydro's engine is expected to be followed by further sea trials and commercial deployment announcements as the industry moves from technology validation toward operational adoption.
