By MGN EditorialFebruary 16, 2026 at 03:23 PM

A roundup of recent maritime industry news, including the scrapping of a sanctioned tanker, the opening of a new transhipment hub in Egypt, and major investments in terminal modernization in Bremerhaven.

## Sanctioned Tanker Heads to Scrap Yard in Alang According to a report from Splash247, a 2004-built LR1 tanker named Diana, which was previously sanctioned by the US Treasury's OFAC in December, has now been sold for recycling. The 72,700 DWT vessel, which was flagged in Jamaica, has been tracked as anchored in the demolition zone at Alang, India's prominent ship recycling hub. The tanker had been involved in 'high-risk trading patterns', leading to the sanctions. ## New 3.3 Million TEU Transhipment Hub Opens in Egypt Splash247 also reported on the official launch of the Damietta Alliance Container Terminal (DACT) in Egypt. This new $600 million transhipment hub in the Mediterranean Sea had its first call over the weekend, with Hapag-Lloyd's 13,117 TEU vessel Essen Express making the inaugural visit. DACT is designed to handle 3.3 million TEUs annually, serving as a strategic gateway for cargo moving between North Africa and global markets. ## $1.2 Billion Modernization Planned for Bremerhaven Terminals In other port infrastructure news, Seatrade Maritime reported that container terminal operators APM Terminals and Eurogate will invest $1.2 billion to modernize their facilities in Bremerhaven, Germany. The project aims to boost capacity by 1 million TEUs and reach net-zero emissions at the terminals. Upgrades will include new cranes, enhanced rail connectivity, and other sustainability initiatives. ## CMA CGM and Midea Partner on Intelligent Logistics Finally, French shipping giant CMA CGM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese home appliance brand Midea to collaborate on 'intelligent logistics', according to Seatrade Maritime. The two companies will work together to bring more efficiency and innovation to global supply chains through the use of digital technologies and data-driven solutions.
