Maritime Shipping Bunkering Shifts Toward Cleaner Fuels in Rotterdam
By MGN Editorial•February 5, 2026 at 11:38 PM
Vessels bunkered over 1 million m³ of LNG, including a growing volume of bio-LNG, at the Port of Rotterdam in 2025 as the industry continues its transition to lower-emission fuels.
The Port of Rotterdam saw a significant increase in the use of cleaner marine fuels in 2025, with vessels bunkering over 1 million m³ of liquefied natural gas (LNG), including a growing volume of bio-LNG.
According to data from the port authority, maritime shipping bunkered a total of 9.8 million tonnes of fuel in Rotterdam last year, up 3,000 tonnes from 2024. Of that total, 17,644 m³ was bio-LNG, a six-fold increase compared to the previous year.
'This represents an important milestone in the industry's transition towards more sustainable fuels,' said Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. 'The growing adoption of bio-LNG is a positive sign that shipping is making progress in reducing its environmental impact.'
The increased use of LNG and bio-LNG aligns with broader trends in the maritime industry, which is under pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Regulations like the IMO's 2020 sulfur cap have driven greater uptake of LNG as a marine fuel, and the availability of bio-LNG provides an even cleaner alternative.
'Bio-LNG offers a pathway for the shipping sector to achieve deeper emissions reductions beyond the use of conventional LNG,' said Mark Brownrigg, director general of industry group SEA-LNG. 'We expect to see continued growth in bio-LNG bunkering as more supply becomes available.'
The Port of Rotterdam's data also showed an overall increase in total marine fuel sales, indicating that shipping activity remained robust despite economic headwinds. The port's position as a major bunkering hub means its trends often reflect broader developments across the global maritime industry.
