Mars Achieves 100% Renewable Electricity Across U.S. Operations in Sustainability Milestone
By MGN Editorial•June 16, 2026 at 05:53 PM
Consumer goods giant Mars has transitioned all U.S. operations to 100% renewable electricity and achieved a 42.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions against a 2015 baseline, signalling growing corporate momentum toward science-based climate targets.
## Mars Reaches Renewable Energy Milestone Amid Broader Corporate Decarbonisation Push
Mars, Incorporated has announced that all of its U.S. operations — spanning veterinary hospitals, manufacturing facilities, and corporate offices — are now powered entirely by renewable electricity, according to a PR Newswire release issued by the company.
The milestone forms part of Mars's broader Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) commitment, under which the company has recorded a 42.6% reduction in combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to its 2015 baseline. The company reports that absolute GHG reductions continued to advance through 2025.
While Mars is primarily known as a consumer goods manufacturer rather than a maritime operator, the development carries relevance for the shipping and logistics sector. Large multinational shippers of Mars's scale exert significant influence over supply chain sustainability standards, and their decarbonisation commitments increasingly translate into procurement requirements placed upon freight carriers, port operators, and logistics providers.
As cargo owners accelerate their own net-zero programmes, shipping lines and port authorities face mounting pressure to demonstrate credible emissions reduction pathways — including the adoption of alternative fuels, shore power infrastructure, and verified carbon accounting across Scope 3 supply chain emissions.
The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) revised GHG Strategy, which targets net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, has intensified scrutiny of the entire logistics chain. Corporate shippers achieving internal milestones such as those reported by Mars are expected to increasingly factor carrier emissions performance into tender and contracting decisions.
Mars's progress also underscores the accelerating pace at which Science Based Targets are being adopted across industries, a trend that maritime stakeholders will need to monitor closely as Scope 3 reporting obligations expand under frameworks such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
