MSC Expands Tanker Footprint With Sinokor Acquisition

By MGN EditorialMarch 20, 2026 at 08:44 PM

Mediterranean Shipping Company is formalizing a strategic partnership with South Korean tanker operator Sinokor Maritime, expanding its presence in the tanker market.

In a move that signals Mediterranean Shipping Company's (MSC) growing ambitions in the tanker sector, the global container shipping giant has announced plans to take joint control of South Korea's Sinokor Maritime. According to a competition filing reviewed by gCaptain, MSC is seeking to acquire a 50% stake in Sinokor, one of the world's largest VLCC (very large crude carrier) owners. The deal would formalize a relationship that has been developing between the two companies in recent years, as MSC has embarked on a major buying spree of VLCCs. 'This partnership will allow MSC to further expand its footprint in the tanker market and leverage Sinokor's expertise and fleet,' said an industry analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity. 'It's a strategic move that reflects MSC's diversification beyond containers.' Sinokor operates a fleet of over 70 vessels, including 30 VLCCs. The company has been a major player in the volatile tanker market, which has seen significant swings in freight rates and asset values in recent years. The proposed acquisition comes as the global shipping industry navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, with tensions in the Middle East threatening the free flow of oil through critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz. In a joint statement, the G7 nations condemned Iran's 'de facto closure' of the Strait, underscoring the strategic importance of secure maritime trade routes. 'MSC's move to deepen its ties with Sinokor suggests the company sees long-term opportunities in the tanker market, even as the sector faces near-term headwinds,' the analyst added. 'It's a bold play that could pay dividends down the road.' The proposed acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals, but if completed, it would mark a significant milestone in MSC's diversification strategy and solidify its position as a major player across multiple shipping segments.
