The North Sea energy sector is seeing accelerating collaboration between traditional oil and gas operators and offshore wind developers, with two significant announcements this week underscoring the industry's transition ambitions.
### Flotation Energy and Harbour Energy Sign Electrification MoU
Edinburgh-headquartered floating wind developer Flotation Energy and London-based oil and gas producer Harbour Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly assess opportunities for powering North Sea oil and gas assets using floating offshore wind energy, according to Offshore Energy.
The partnership reflects a broader industry trend toward 'power from shore' and offshore electrification strategies, which aim to reduce the carbon footprint of upstream production by replacing gas turbine-generated electricity on platforms with renewable sources. Floating wind technology is considered particularly well-suited to the deeper waters of the northern North Sea, where fixed-bottom installations are not viable.
Harbour Energy is one of the UK's largest independent oil and gas producers, making this collaboration a potentially significant step in demonstrating the commercial viability of floating wind-to-platform electrification at scale. The MoU signals intent to move beyond concept studies toward concrete project assessment, though no specific assets or timelines have been disclosed at this stage.
### Equinor Deploys Cable Monitoring Technology at Sheringham Shoal
In a separate development, Norwegian energy major Equinor has awarded a contract to subsea technology firm Proserv for the deployment of cable monitoring technology at one of its offshore wind farms, reported to be approximately nine years old, Offshore Energy reports.
The contract highlights the growing importance of asset integrity management as the first generation of commercial-scale offshore wind installations matures. Subsea power cables represent one of the most critical — and costly — components of offshore wind infrastructure, and monitoring solutions that can detect early signs of degradation are increasingly in demand as operators seek to extend asset life and reduce unplanned downtime.
Proserv's appointment by Equinor reflects confidence in third-party specialist technology providers as wind farm operators look to optimise operations across ageing fleets.
