NYK Claims 65% Emissions Reduction from Methanol-Powered Bulk Carrier
By MGN Editorial•February 12, 2026 at 09:41 AM
NYK Line reports significant emissions reductions from the first use of methanol as fuel on a bulk carrier vessel chartered by BHP.
In a significant milestone for the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts, NYK Line has announced that its methanol-powered bulk carrier vessel 'Green Future' has achieved a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional fuel oil-powered ship.
The 'Green Future' is the first bulk carrier vessel to utilize methanol as its primary fuel, marking an important step forward in the industry's transition to alternative, lower-carbon fuels. The vessel is chartered by global mining company BHP and is part of NYK's broader initiative to develop and deploy more sustainable shipping solutions.
According to NYK, the use of methanol as a marine fuel has allowed the 'Green Future' to achieve a 65% reduction in well-to-wake CO2 emissions compared to a similar vessel running on conventional fuel oil. This substantial emissions savings is a testament to the potential of methanol to serve as a viable, lower-emissions alternative to traditional bunker fuels.
'The successful operation of the 'Green Future' demonstrates that methanol can be a game-changing solution for decarbonizing the shipping industry,' said Hitoshi Nagasawa, President of NYK Line. 'We are proud to partner with BHP on this pioneering project and look forward to continuing to explore ways that we can reduce the environmental impact of maritime transportation.'
The 'Green Future' project is just one example of the maritime industry's growing embrace of alternative fuels and propulsion systems as it works to meet ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets. As shipping companies and regulators alike prioritize sustainability, innovative solutions like methanol-powered vessels will likely play an increasingly important role in the years ahead.
