Marine Biotech Firm PhyCo Secures $25,000 Grant to Advance Seaweed-Based Agricultural Plastic Alternatives

Female-founded marine biotechnology company PhyCo has been named the recipient of Shift Browser's second annual $25,000 Impact Grant, with unrestricted funding earmarked to accelerate development of seaweed-derived alternatives to conventional agricultural plastics.
Marine biotechnology company PhyCo™ has received a $25,000 unrestricted Impact Grant from Shift, a Victoria, BC-based software firm, marking the second year the browser developer has directed funding toward ocean-focused sustainability innovation.
According to a PR Newswire release dated August 6, 2026, PhyCo — a female-founded company — will use the grant to advance its work developing seaweed-based alternatives to plastics currently used in agricultural applications. The funding is unrestricted, giving the company flexibility to direct resources where they are most needed across its research and commercialisation pipeline.
The award highlights a growing intersection between marine biology and the global effort to reduce plastic pollution. Agricultural plastics — including mulch films, silage wraps, and irrigation components — represent a significant and often overlooked segment of plastic waste, much of which eventually enters waterways and marine environments. Seaweed-derived biopolymers are increasingly viewed as a promising feedstock for biodegradable alternatives, given seaweed's rapid growth rates, lack of requirement for freshwater or arable land, and potential to sequester carbon during cultivation.
PhyCo's work sits within a broader wave of marine biotechnology investment targeting the so-called 'blue bioeconomy' — the sustainable use of ocean-based biological resources for industrial and commercial applications. Seaweed cultivation and processing has attracted particular attention from investors and policymakers in recent years as both a climate mitigation tool and a source of high-value bio-based materials.
While the grant amount is modest relative to institutional research funding, unrestricted early-stage capital can be critical for small biotechnology firms navigating the gap between laboratory development and commercial scale-up.
Shift's decision to focus its philanthropic programme on marine and environmental impact organisations underscores how companies outside the traditional maritime sector are increasingly engaging with ocean health as a core sustainability priority.
