Scorpio Tankers Accelerates Fleet Transformation with VLCC Acquisitions and Product Tanker Disposals
By MGN Editorial•September 30, 2026 at 06:00 AM
Scorpio Tankers is reshaping its fleet profile, ordering additional VLCCs at Chinese yards while divesting a trio of product tankers, signalling a strategic pivot toward the crude tanker segment.
## Scorpio Tankers Doubles Down on VLCCs in Major Fleet Restructuring Move
Scorpio Tankers is pressing ahead with a significant fleet transformation strategy, placing fresh orders for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) while simultaneously offloading product tanker tonnage, according to Seatrade Maritime.
The New York-listed tanker owner has booked two additional LR2 newbuildings at Jiangsu Shipyard and two VLCCs at Hengli Shipbuilding, further expanding its footprint in the crude carrier market. The newbuilding programme runs alongside the sale of three product tankers from its existing fleet — comprising one Medium Range (MR) tanker and two LR2 vessels.
### Strategic Shift Toward Crude
The transactions represent a clear directional move by Scorpio away from the refined product tanker segment that has historically defined the company's identity. By divesting MR and LR2 product tankers while simultaneously ordering VLCCs, management appears to be repositioning the business to capitalise on anticipated strength in the crude tanker market.
VLCCs, which typically carry up to two million barrels of crude oil, operate on long-haul trade routes and are considered a bellwether for global oil demand. The decision to order at Hengli — a relatively newer entrant to the large tanker construction market — alongside established builder Jiangsu reflects the competitive pricing environment currently available at Chinese yards.
### Fleet Renewal Context
The asset sales serve a dual purpose: generating capital to fund the newbuilding programme while trimming older or non-core tonnage from the fleet. The LR2 product tankers being sold had previously benefited from elevated product tanker earnings during the post-2022 trade disruption period, potentially offering Scorpio an opportunity to realise strong asset values before any market softening.
The moves are consistent with a broader trend among major tanker owners to actively manage fleet composition in response to shifting trade flows, evolving energy markets, and the long lead times associated with newbuilding deliveries.
Scorpio Tankers has not yet disclosed the financial terms of either the vessel sales or the newbuilding contracts. Delivery timelines for the ordered vessels are also pending confirmation.
