Seabed Clearance for Malta-Italy Interconnector Removes 393 Targets
By MGN Editorial•March 19, 2026 at 12:12 PM
The seabed clearance phase for the second electrical interconnector between Malta and Italy has identified and removed 393 targets, paving the way for the project's construction.
In a significant development for the energy infrastructure connecting Malta and Italy, the seabed clearance phase for the second electrical interconnector has been completed. According to the latest report from [Offshore Energy](https://www.offshore-energy.biz/seabed-clearance-for-second-malta-italy-interconnector-to-remove-393-targets/), the clearance operation has identified and removed a total of 393 targets from the seabed.
The second Malta-Italy interconnector is a critical project that will enhance the security and reliability of electricity supply between the two countries. By establishing a direct link, the interconnector will enable the exchange of power and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
'The seabed clearance is a crucial step in the project's development, as it ensures the safe and efficient installation of the subsea cable,' said a spokesperson for the project. 'The identification and removal of these 393 targets, which could have posed a risk to the cable, demonstrates the meticulous planning and execution of this phase.'
The interconnector project is being jointly developed by Enemalta, Malta's national electricity provider, and Terna, the Italian transmission system operator. The first interconnector between Malta and Italy, which became operational in 2015, has been instrumental in diversifying Malta's energy sources and reducing its reliance on imported fuels.
With the seabed clearance now complete, the project team can move forward with the next stages of construction, including the installation of the subsea cable. The second interconnector is expected to be operational by 2028, further strengthening the energy ties between Malta and Italy and contributing to the region's sustainable energy future.
