Seatrium and Karpowership Partner to Develop Floating Power Infrastructure in Singapore
By MGN Editorial•October 27, 2026 at 06:00 PM
Singapore-based shipyard and repair group Seatrium has signed a memorandum of understanding with Karpowership to jointly develop floating power and digital infrastructure solutions, marking a significant step in the region's energy transition landscape.
## Seatrium and Karpowership Sign MoU for Floating Power Development in Singapore
Singapore's leading shipyard and offshore engineering group Seatrium has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Karpowership, the global floating power solutions provider, to jointly develop floating power and digital infrastructure in Singapore, according to Seatrade Maritime.
The partnership signals a strategic convergence between shipbuilding expertise and floating power generation technology, with both companies looking to leverage Singapore's position as a key maritime and energy hub in Southeast Asia.
Karpowership, which operates one of the world's largest fleets of powerships — vessel-mounted power plants capable of delivering electricity directly to national grids — brings substantial operational experience in floating power generation to the collaboration. Seatrium, formed through the merger of Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Offshore & Marine, contributes deep capabilities in offshore construction, marine engineering, and ship repair.
### Strategic Significance
The MoU reflects a broader industry trend of maritime infrastructure companies diversifying into the floating energy sector, as governments and utilities seek flexible, rapidly deployable power solutions. Floating power assets are increasingly viewed as a viable complement to land-based generation, particularly in island nations and regions with constrained grid infrastructure.
Singapore, which has long positioned itself as a centre for maritime innovation and offshore energy development, provides a natural base for the joint initiative. The inclusion of digital infrastructure in the partnership's scope suggests the collaboration may extend beyond conventional power generation to encompass smart grid connectivity and data-driven energy management systems.
Further details regarding project timelines, capacity targets, and investment commitments have not yet been disclosed. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how the partnership evolves, particularly given Seatrium's ongoing efforts to expand its portfolio beyond traditional shipbuilding and repair into higher-margin offshore energy segments.
