Shell Brings Phase 3 Silvertip Online at Perdido Spar in Gulf of America
By MGN Editorial•October 28, 2026 at 06:00 PM
Shell Offshore Inc. has announced the start of production at Phase 3 of the Silvertip project, adding two new wells to boost output at the Perdido spar facility in the Gulf of America.
## Shell Expands Deepwater Output with Silvertip Phase 3
Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has commenced production at Phase 3 of its Silvertip deepwater project in the Gulf of America (GoA), the company announced on October 28, 2026.
The latest phase delivers two additional production wells tied back to the Shell-operated Perdido spar, one of the world's deepest offshore production facilities. The expansion is designed to sustain and grow output from the Perdido hub, which has been a cornerstone of Shell's deepwater Gulf of America portfolio since it first came online in 2010.
### Strategic Significance of Perdido
The Perdido spar sits in approximately 2,450 metres of water in the Alaminos Canyon block, making it one of the most technically complex deepwater operations in the world. Silvertip is one of several subsea tiebacks that feed into the Perdido host facility, and the phased development approach has allowed Shell to maximise recovery from the broader field complex while managing capital expenditure.
Phase 3 represents a continued commitment by Shell to sweating existing deepwater infrastructure in the GoA rather than relying solely on greenfield developments. Tieback projects of this nature typically carry lower break-even costs and shorter lead times compared to standalone deepwater installations, making them an attractive tool for maintaining production plateaus.
### Broader Gulf of America Context
The announcement comes as operators across the Gulf of America continue to invest in production optimisation and subsea tieback strategies to offset natural field decline. The GoA remains one of the most prolific deepwater basins globally, and Shell's ongoing investment at Perdido underscores the region's enduring importance to major international oil companies.
Shell has not disclosed specific production rate targets for the two new Silvertip Phase 3 wells, but the addition is expected to provide a meaningful near-term uplift to Perdido's overall throughput capacity.
