Trump Calls for International Cooperation to Secure Strait of Hormuz

By MGN EditorialMarch 16, 2026 at 12:02 PM

President Trump calls on other countries to help secure the vital Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

In a move to bolster security in the Middle East, President Donald Trump has called on other countries to help secure the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, according to reporting from Reuters. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Tensions have been rising in the region following a series of attacks on oil tankers and other maritime vessels, which the U.S. has blamed on Iran. 'We're talking to a lot of countries about it and we're talking to countries that are very rich that have not been doing their share,' Trump told reporters on Sunday. He did not specify which countries the U.S. is in discussions with. The EU is also set to discuss ways to strengthen its small naval mission in the Middle East, known as EUNAVFOR MED Irini, in response to the growing instability, according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. However, the bloc is not expected to significantly expand the mission at this time. Securing the Strait of Hormuz is crucial for the global economy, as an estimated 21 million barrels of oil pass through the waterway each day, accounting for about 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption. Any disruption to shipping in the region could have significant impacts on energy markets and the broader maritime industry. The Trump administration's call for greater international cooperation to safeguard the strait reflects the strategic importance of this maritime chokepoint and the need for a coordinated response to the heightened tensions in the Middle East.
