VTT Spinout Elea & Lili Raises €2.5M to Commercialize Microplastic-Free Superabsorbent Material

Finnish startup Elea & Lili has raised €2.5 million to bring its microplastic-free superabsorbent materials to market for use in hygiene products and agriculture.

Elea & Lili, a spinout from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, has raised €2.5 million in funding to commercialize its innovative microplastic-free superabsorbent materials. The startup's technology offers a sustainable alternative to the fossil-based superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) commonly used in disposable diapers and agricultural water retention products. According to the press release, disposable diapers and agricultural water retention products currently rely on SAPs that 'contribute to microplastic pollution and persistent plastic waste.' Elea & Lili's biomaterials research at VTT over the past decade has led to the development of a new class of superabsorbent materials made from renewable, biodegradable sources. 'Backed by over a decade of biomaterials research at VTT, we are excited to bring our microplastic-free superabsorbent materials to market and help address the growing environmental concerns around plastic waste,' said Elea & Lili CEO Johanna Kärki. The €2.5 million in funding will allow Elea & Lili to accelerate the commercialization of its technology, which the company says can be used in a wide range of applications beyond just hygiene and agriculture. As the maritime industry continues to grapple with the impacts of microplastics, innovations like those from Elea & Lili could play an important role in developing more sustainable alternatives.
