FirstEnergy Transmission Awarded Major Grid Upgrade Projects
By MGN Editorial•March 2, 2026 at 05:06 PM
FirstEnergy Transmission has been selected by PJM Interconnection to build several key projects that will enhance power grid reliability and address rising customer demand in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
In a significant development for the maritime industry, FirstEnergy Transmission LLC (FET) has been awarded multiple projects by regional transmission grid operator PJM Interconnection LLC to strengthen the power grid and prepare it for future growth.
According to the announcement from FET's parent company FirstEnergy Corp., the projects will 'make the power grid stronger, more reliable and ready for future growth' in Ohio and Pennsylvania - two states with major maritime and port operations.
The upgrades come as the region experiences rising electricity demand, likely driven by the continued expansion of maritime trade, logistics, and energy infrastructure along the Great Lakes and Ohio River. 'These strategic investments will enhance the reliability of the transmission system and support the growing energy needs of our customers,' said Samuel Belcher, Senior Vice President and President of FirstEnergy Transmission.
The specific projects awarded to FET by PJM include building new transmission lines, upgrading substations, and other grid modernization initiatives. These enhancements are expected to improve power quality, reduce outages, and enable the integration of additional renewable energy sources - all critical capabilities for the maritime sector's transition to a lower-carbon future.
'Strengthening the regional power grid is essential for supporting the maritime industry's growth and sustainability goals,' commented the editor of a leading maritime news site. 'These infrastructure upgrades by FirstEnergy will help ensure the industry has the reliable, resilient electricity supply it needs to thrive in the years ahead.'
