Floating Solar and Tight Reservoir Innovations Boost Offshore Energy
By MGN Editorial•March 4, 2026 at 09:35 PM
Developments in floating solar technology and new techniques to unlock oil and gas from tight reservoirs are driving innovation in the offshore energy sector.
The maritime industry is seeing a wave of innovation in offshore energy, with new technologies and collaborative efforts aimed at boosting renewable power and unlocking hard-to-reach hydrocarbon resources.
According to Offshore Energy, Dutch-Norwegian company SolarDuck has launched an advisory board to support the integration of its floating solar technology within the carbon capture and storage (CCS) and offshore energy sectors. The advisory board will help 'identify synergies and opportunities' for SolarDuck's floating solar platforms, which the company says can be co-located with offshore oil and gas infrastructure or wind farms.
'Cooperation, cost cuts, and new tech' are the keys to unlocking oil and gas from tight reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, reports the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD). With large quantities of hydrocarbons trapped in these challenging geological formations, the NOD is highlighting ways operators can speed up production, such as through collaborative efforts and deploying the latest drilling and extraction technologies.
The drive for greater efficiency and sustainability in offshore energy aligns with broader industry trends, as maritime stakeholders increasingly seek to reduce emissions, leverage renewable power, and unlock new sources of fossil fuels to meet global energy demand. These developments in floating solar and tight reservoir production demonstrate the sector's ongoing efforts to innovate and adapt.
