German utility RWE will supply Munich Airport with 40GWh of electricity per year from a new offshore wind farm in the North Sea, under a 10-year power purchase agreement.
In a move to bolster its sustainability efforts, Munich Airport has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement with German utility RWE to supply the airport with 40GWh of electricity per year from a new offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
According to the report from Splash247, the electricity will be supplied by RWE's Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm, which is currently under construction. This agreement will help Munich Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, reduce its carbon footprint and reliance on traditional energy sources.
'This long-term power purchase agreement with RWE is an important step in our efforts to make Munich Airport more sustainable,' said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport. 'It will allow us to cover a significant portion of our electricity needs with renewable energy from the North Sea.'
The deal aligns with Munich Airport's broader sustainability goals, which include achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. By tapping into offshore wind power, the airport can significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the transition to a more sustainable aviation industry.
'We are pleased to support Munich Airport in its sustainability efforts,' said Katja Wünschel, CEO of Onshore and Offshore Wind and Solar at RWE Renewables. 'This agreement demonstrates how renewable energy can be a reliable and cost-effective solution for large energy consumers like airports.'
The partnership between Munich Airport and RWE is a prime example of the maritime industry's growing focus on renewable energy solutions to address climate change and reduce emissions across various sectors.
