The project represents a strategic effort to reconcile two competing priorities that increasingly define late-life asset management in the offshore sector: maximising the productive longevity of existing infrastructure while meeting tightening greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets. ### Shore Power as a Decarbonisation Lever By routing electricity from shore to offshore installations — a concept known as 'power from shore' or offshore electrification — operators can eliminate or substantially reduce the use of gas turbines and diesel generators that traditionally supply platform energy needs. These onboard generators are among the most significant sources of direct emissions in offshore oil and gas operations. The Campos Basin, located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, is one of Brazil's most mature and prolific offshore producing regions. Many of its fields, including those operated by Perenco, are in shallow water, making the logistical and technical challenges of shore power connectivity comparatively more manageable than deepwater alternatives. ### Porto do Açu's Role Porto do Açu, the large-scale industrial port and energy hub situated on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, is positioned as the onshore anchor for the initiative. The port has been actively developing its credentials as an energy transition hub, hosting renewable energy projects and offshore industry services — making it a natural partner for an electrification scheme of this nature. ### Industry Significance The Perenco-Porto do Açu collaboration reflects a broader trend across global offshore markets, where regulators and investors are pressing operators to decarbonise producing assets rather than simply decommission them.
