TotalEnergies Sanctions Offshore Nigeria Gas Project to Underpin NLNG Train 7 Expansion
By MGN Editorial•September 23, 2026 at 02:36 PM
TotalEnergies and Nigerian partner AMNI have taken a final investment decision on an offshore gas development designed to supply approximately one-third of the feedstock needed for Nigeria LNG's Train 7 expansion project.
## TotalEnergies Greenlights Nigerian Offshore Gas Development for NLNG Train 7
France's TotalEnergies has taken a final investment decision (FID) on a new offshore gas project in Nigeria, partnering with local operator AMNI to develop a field that will serve as a critical feedstock source for the country's next major liquefied natural gas expansion, according to Offshore Energy.
The project is designed to supply roughly one-third of the gas volumes required to feed Nigeria LNG's (NLNG) Train 7 — a long-anticipated expansion of the Bonny Island LNG facility that would significantly boost Nigeria's LNG export capacity. The development has been structured as a low-emission project, reflecting TotalEnergies' broader commitment to reducing the carbon intensity of its upstream portfolio.
### Strategic Significance for Nigeria's LNG Ambitions
Nigeria LNG Train 7 represents one of West Africa's most consequential energy infrastructure projects. Once operational, the additional train is expected to increase NLNG's total production capacity from approximately 22 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to around 30 mtpa, reinforcing Nigeria's position as a leading global LNG supplier at a time when European and Asian buyers continue to seek diversified sources of natural gas.
Securing reliable, low-emission upstream gas supply has been a key prerequisite for progressing Train 7 toward full operational status. The TotalEnergies-AMNI project addresses a significant portion of that feedstock requirement, providing greater certainty around the expansion's production timeline.
### Low-Emission Development Framework
The decision to advance the project under a low-emission framework aligns with increasing pressure from investors, regulators, and offtake partners for upstream developers to minimise routine flaring and reduce methane intensity across the LNG supply chain. TotalEnergies has been progressively applying low-emission development standards across its African upstream portfolio as part of its net-zero pathway commitments.
The partnership with AMNI — a Nigerian independent — also reflects the continued role of local operators in Nigeria's upstream sector, consistent with the country's domestic content objectives under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
### Market Context
The FID comes amid sustained global demand for LNG, particularly from European nations seeking to reduce dependence on Russian pipeline gas. Nigeria, with its established export infrastructure and proximity to Atlantic Basin markets, remains a strategically important supplier. Additional upstream commitments of this nature are expected to support long-term offtake agreements and provide confidence to project financiers and LNG buyers alike.
Further technical and commercial details of the TotalEnergies-AMNI development, including field name, estimated reserves, and production start timelines, are expected to be disclosed as the project advances through its development phases.
