Stratospheric Connectivity Milestone: Sceye and SoftBank Demonstrate Laser Tracking of HAPS Platform

By MGN EditorialSeptember 23, 2026 at 09:41 AM

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. have completed a world-first ground-based laser ranging demonstration targeting a high-altitude platform station, a development with potential implications for maritime broadband and remote connectivity infrastructure.

## Stratospheric Laser Tracking Milestone Could Advance Maritime Connectivity A technology demonstration with potential long-term implications for maritime communications has been completed in New Mexico, as U.S.-based stratospheric platform developer Sceye supported SoftBank Corp. in what both companies describe as a world-first ground-based laser ranging exercise targeting a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS). According to a press release issued via PR Newswire on 23 September 2026, SoftBank Corp.'s ground team successfully tracked Sceye's stratospheric platform in real time, continuously receiving reflected laser signals from the airborne system. The demonstration advances the development of free-space optical (FSO) communications — a technology capable of transmitting data at high speeds across ground, stratospheric, and space segments without reliance on traditional radio-frequency spectrum. ### Relevance to Maritime Operations While the demonstration took place over land in Moriarty, New Mexico, the underlying technology carries significant implications for the maritime sector. HAPS platforms operating in the stratosphere — typically at altitudes of 20 kilometres or above — are capable of providing persistent, wide-area connectivity coverage over oceanic regions where terrestrial infrastructure is absent and low-earth orbit satellite constellations may face latency or capacity constraints. FSO communications, if successfully deployed at scale between ground stations, stratospheric platforms, and satellites, could offer shipping operators, offshore energy installations, and naval fleets a high-bandwidth, low-latency alternative or complement to existing VSAT and LEO satellite services. ### Technology Background Sceye's platform is a lighter-than-air stratospheric airship designed for long-endurance station-keeping at high altitude. The company has positioned its technology as a solution for connectivity in underserved and remote regions. SoftBank Corp., a major Japanese telecommunications conglomerate, has been an active investor and developer in the HAPS communications space through its subsidiary HAPSMobile. The laser ranging milestone represents a foundational step toward establishing optical inter-layer links — a prerequisite for building reliable FSO communication networks that could eventually serve maritime and remote terrestrial users alike. ### Industry Outlook The maritime communications market continues to evolve rapidly, with operators demanding greater bandwidth to support vessel automation, crew welfare services, and real-time operational data transfer. Stratospheric platforms offering FSO connectivity could emerge as a complementary layer within the broader non-terrestrial network (NTN) ecosystem over the coming decade. No commercial deployment timeline has been announced by either Sceye or SoftBank Corp. at this stage.
