Blue Water Autonomy and Damen announce plans for series production of new autonomous Liberty-class ships at Conrad Shipyard in the US.
In a move that could provide a significant boost to US shipbuilding, Blue Water Autonomy and Damen have revealed plans for the series production of new autonomous Liberty-class ships at Conrad Shipyard in the United States.
According to the announcement from Seatrade Maritime, the two companies have formed a strategic partnership to bring these advanced autonomous naval craft to market. The Liberty-class vessels will be built at Conrad Shipyard's facilities, leveraging the shipyard's expertise and capabilities.
'This partnership represents an important step forward in the development and deployment of autonomous maritime technologies,' said a spokesperson for Blue Water Autonomy. 'By working with an established shipbuilder like Damen, we can accelerate the commercialization of our autonomous systems and deliver innovative solutions to naval and commercial customers.'
The Liberty-class ships are designed to operate with high levels of autonomy, reducing the need for large crew complements. This aligns with growing demand for unmanned and remotely operated vessels across both defense and commercial maritime sectors. Damen's involvement brings proven shipbuilding experience and a global footprint to support the initiative.
'Autonomous technologies are transforming the maritime industry, and we're excited to be part of this important project with Blue Water Autonomy,' said a Damen representative. 'The Liberty-class vessels will showcase the potential for autonomous systems to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in naval and commercial applications.'
This announcement comes at a time of increased investment and activity in the US shipbuilding sector, driven by factors such as infrastructure upgrades, defense modernization, and the growth of offshore wind. The partnership between Blue Water Autonomy and Damen represents a significant step forward in leveraging autonomous technologies to bolster American shipbuilding capabilities.
