Utility-Scale Energy Storage Booms in Texas and California

By MGN EditorialMarch 24, 2026 at 04:05 PM

Major new energy storage projects are being developed in Texas and California, supporting the growth of renewable energy and grid resilience.

The maritime industry is closely watching the rapid expansion of utility-scale energy storage projects in key energy markets, which are playing a critical role in enabling the transition to renewable power. In Texas, esVolta has secured $139.6 million in project financing for its 300 MWh 'Boxcar' energy storage facility, which will bring the company's total ERCOT energy storage portfolio to nearly 1.6 GWh once online. 'This project represents a significant milestone for esVolta as we continue to build out our portfolio of large-scale battery storage assets to support the growth of renewable energy in Texas,' said Randolph Mann, President of esVolta. Meanwhile, in California, Arevon Energy has begun construction on its $600 million 'Cormorant' energy storage project. The 400 MW / 1,600 MWh facility will be one of the largest standalone battery storage projects in the world, reinforcing Arevon's position as a leading developer in the state. 'Cormorant will play a crucial role in supporting California's clean energy transition and grid reliability,' said John Breckenridge, CEO of Arevon Energy. These projects are part of a broader trend of utility-scale energy storage development, which is critical for integrating high levels of variable renewable energy like solar and wind onto power grids. According to industry analysts, the global energy storage market is expected to grow from 17 GW in 2021 to over 1,000 GW by 2030, with the U.S. and China leading deployment. The maritime industry has a keen interest in the growth of energy storage, as it enables decarbonization of port operations, ship-to-shore power, and shore-based vessel charging. As the transition to alternative fuels and electrification accelerates, reliable, large-scale energy storage will be essential for supporting the industry's sustainability goals.
